Current Projects

1. International Labour Organisation (ILO)/ United States Department of Labour (USDOL) project

The project was started in August 2004 to assist Lesotho in mitigating the impact of HIV and AIDS in the workplace. It is funded by the International Labour Organisation and the United States Department of Labour. The project’s term ended in April 2007 but was extended for a few months and it is expected that the Ministry of Labour and Employment will take over the project and sustain it.

The objectives of the project are the following:

• To assist companies with putting in place HIV and AIDS policies and reviews them;
• To develop educational manuals in the textile and construction industry;
• To train Inspectors on HIV and AIDS issues;
• To establish structures to effectively deal with HIV and AIDS in workplaces;
• To assist in reviewing the Labour Code Amendment Act;
• To assist in the development of HIV and AIDS guidelines.

2. Improving Labour Systems in Southern Africa (ILSSA) Project

The project is an ILO initiative aimed at improving labour administration in Southern Africa, and Lesotho is one of the beneficiaries. The Project is also aimed at ensuring compliance with national labour laws. The main objectives of the project are the following:

• To improve relations between employees and employers;
• To improve dispute resolution in the country through the DDPR and the Labour Court;
• To increase knowledge amongst employers and workers about their rights and obligations;
• To provide training for employers and employees on the Labour Code Order 1992 and its amendments;
• To engage the Ministry of Labour and Employment in a communication strategy to enable them to liaise with other media;
• To improve the national labour laws.

3. Work and Health in Southern Africa (WAHSA)

WAHSA is a twelve-year programme for strategic development in OSH&EH in the SADC Region. It is a Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida)-funded initiative in Southern Africa, in collaboration with Southern African Development Community (SADC), South African National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH), and Swedish National Institute of Public Health (NIPH).

The overall objective is to contribute to poverty reduction by social and economic development in the SADC Region through improvements in OSH& EH. This Programme represents an integrated effort with existing programmes on Occupational Safety and Health in various SADC Sectors (Employment and Labour; Health; Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources; Human Resource Development; Environment and Land Management and Mining) and with other international efforts in the SADC region.
